Character: Chelsea
Age: Early 20s
Canon: Akame ga Kill!
Canon Point: Chapter 33
Background: Here
Personality:
Chelsea’s personality is very reflective of her life experiences. When she was younger, working as a servant for a cruel viceroy who hunted human beings for sport squashed her dreams of living a happy life, forcing her to face the brutality of the world firsthand; this sent her down a nihilistic spiral. It likely would have killed her spirit if she hadn’t come across the teigu Gaia Foundation. Its power allowed her to assassinate the corrupt viceroy and change her homeland for the better. This back story highlights a few of Chelsea’s defining traits: willingness to get her hands dirty; a deadly passion for bettering the word—and, on top of that, a strong desire to play an important role.
With many, many successful assassinations under her belt, Chelsea is confident in her killing abilities. In order to use her teigu well, Chelsea relies on deception—an art that she has more or less mastered, with the help of her quick wits and focused demeanor. Also helpful is her studious nature, which is what gave her the opportunity to work for such a high profile member of the government in the first place. During her attempt to kill Kurome, Chelsea is able to fool the former while impersonating Bols, her teammate, using information gathered by Tatsumi. Likewise, she is shown to know quite a bit about all of her targets and uses what she’s gleaned to exploit their specific weaknesses.
Pragmatism is another one of Chelsea’s important traits. When she first joins Night Raid, she ruffles a few feathers by suggesting that their former comrades were killed in action because they were “soft.” While she’s right to an extent (both lost their lives while protecting a more vulnerable member of their party) the harsh words also have an emotional basis; the last team she worked with was completely wiped out, so she’s reasonably hesitant to dive in and start making friends. That said, Night Raid’s camaraderie does have an effect on her, and later she shows them some (largely teasing and playful) affection. Tatsumi is the exception, and she starts to have feelings for him that, unfortunately, influence her into taking a risk that results in her death.
Since she is being taken post-death, she will arrive on the island even more jaded over relationships than before. Still, it’s not going to show on the surface. In lighter situations, she’s more than a bit of a teasing flirt (towards both genders), and she enjoys playing pranks on people, often abusing her teigu to pull them off. Deep down at her core she does like people, and humanity as a whole, hence why she’s willing to kill in order to make the world better. So while at first she’ll definitely be keeping almost everybody at arm’s length, it won’t last forever. Having friends is important to her, even if she’d rather come off as cool and aloof.
After her very first assassination, there’s little reason to believe that Chelsea has ever humored the idea that she’s doing the wrong thing. She is 100% committed to the cause, and shows her foes no mercy, and little, if any, remorse. In Night Raid’s battle against Bols and Kurome, she dispatches one of the latter’s undead puppets by disguising herself as a member of his old tribe. Similarly, she poses as a crying girl to win Bols’s pity and trust, then reveals to him that the girl was someone he burned to death while torching an entire village that had ties to the resistance. This shows that a) again, she pulls no punches and b) she takes a kind of vengeful pride in her work.
Finally, and mostly extraneously, Chelsea likes sweets. Lollipops are her favorite, and she has one in her mouth in most of the panels where she appears.
Abilities:
Chelsea’s Gaia Foundation allows her to take the exact appearance of almost anything and anyone. The exact limits are never revealed, but I will be sticking to people and things that are person-sized or smaller. Of course, I’ll always ask permission before having her disguise herself as a player character or important NPC. Beyond her teigu, Chelsea’s weapon of choice is a needle. She knows all of the vital points on the human body, however small, typically targeting the back of the neck.
Alignment: Peromei. The true horrors of the world, and her inability to change them, drove her to near despair. Upon discovering she can make a difference, it’s her hope to create a better future that drives her on.
Other: I play from this canon already, obviously, but Chelsea and Wave never interact on page (or even so much as mention each other) so player-cest shouldn’t be an issue.
